Love Breeds Unity

“And over all of these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:14.

What are the virtues that Paul is talking about? It starts with verse 12. We’re called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness. Then for love to seep through the gaps and bind it all together.

Yet before all that, verse 12 starts with a ‘therefore.’ ‘Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved…’ With our identity secure in Him, we are called to a higher standard for everything in our lives, as imitators of Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of our faith. This includes our interactions with each other.

Too often it’s easy to see the world solely through our eyes, but God calls us to two main commandments: love God, and love others. It’s the overflow from the first that enables the second.

Today, when (not if) but when we encounter a moment where we could either be right, or kind. Let’s collectively choose kind. Let’s shower those around us with the love of God. The love that speaks the loudest when we’re quiet and waiting to hear his voice. Let’s be filled with him, so we can overflow to others.
